Conditions & Effects

Conditions & Effects

Conditions, effects, or status effects are short to long term effects that may or may not grant advantage and/or disadvantage to attacks against you or attacks that you make or when attempting to overcome an obstacle, disable or disarm a trap, or avoid a hazard. For example, if you are blinded, you suffer disadvantage on all attacks you make and anyone attacking you gains advantage.

Blinded

You have lost sight of your surroundings. Your enemies now have the upper hand!

  • You grant advantage to all attacks made against you.
  • You are at a disadvantage with all attacks.
  • Targets of your attacks are considered to be hidden.

Bloodied

Pain, blood loss, and injury have left you vulnerable to your enemies.

  • You grant advantage to all attacks made against you.

Charging

You blitz across the battlefield, lowering your defenses to strike a powerful blow.

  • You grant advantage to all attacks made against you.
  • You gain advantage on all melee attacks.

Cover

You duck behind the ruins of a low wall, taking cover behind it.

  • Ranged attacks made against you are at a disadvantage.
  • You take half damage from ranged attacks. This does not apply to burst attacks that emanate from a square that would not grant you cover.
  • Example: You're standing behind a fence and a mage casts a fireball at the ground behind you. The attack is at a disadvantage since the fence is between you and the mage, but you take full damage if the mage hits since the fence is not between you and the square targeted by the mage.

Dazed

You stagger around on the battlefield, barely able to defend yourself… let alone attack. Blurry vision and ringing in your ears leaves you dazed.

  • You grant advantage to all attacks made against you.
  • You cannot make opportunity attacks.
  • You cannot take actions during the Battle Phase.

Deafened

A clap of thunder or a sudden roar of an explosion has left you unable to hear.

  • You cannot hear.
  • Enemies attempting to use sneak gain advantage against you.
  • Your attempts to hear someone sneaking are at a disadvantage.

Defeated

Your last breath draws near. Your life's blood spills out onto the ground.

  • You are helpless.
  • You are prone.
  • You are unconscious.
  • Any attack against you that deals damage immediately kills you.
  • If you are defeated at the end of a round that you started with the dying condition, you die. For example, in round six, your adventurer was hit and dropped to zero hit points. Your adventurer is now 'defeated'. During the end phase of round six, your adventurer does not die because they did not start round six 'defeated'. If your adventurer is not healed by the end of round seven, then they will die.

Dominated

You've become trapped in your own mind and body, unable to control it. Someone or something else pulls your strings now.

  • You cannot take any actions during any phase.
  • As a free action during their turn, the creature or object dominating you may force you to use a movement or battle action during either phase, but not both in the same round.
  • Any attacks against you made by allies of the creature or object dominating you grants you a chance to break free. After resolving the attack, immediately roll a saving throw to end the domination. You may also attempt to break free if an action would put you in deadly danger, such as jumping off a bridge into a deep chasm.

Helpless

Bound by magic or sapped of all strength by poison, you are incapable of doing little more than struggle for each breath.

  • You grant advantage to all attacks made against you.
  • Any attack that hits automatically deals maximum damage.
  • You cannot take any actions during any phase.

Hidden

Skill or magic has shrouded you from view, leaving your enemies at a disadvantage.

  • All attacks made against you are at a disadvantage.
  • You are no longer hidden if you move or make an attack.
  • If you make an attack while hidden, you gain advantage on that attack.

Hustled

Hurrying across the battlefield, you open yourself to attacks from your enemies, but seize vital ground.

  • You grant advantage to all attacks made against you.

Immobilized

You legs have been bound, leaving you stuck in place and unable to dodge your enemies attacks.

  • You grant advantage to all ranged attacks made against you.
  • You cannot shift, walk, charge, hustle, or run.

Marked

You have been singled out by a foe. Ignoring that enemy could be disastrous.

  • Your attacks that do not target the creature that marked you are at a disadvantage.

Paralyzed

  • You cannot take any actions.
  • You do not age.

  • You grant advantage to all melee attacks made against you.
  • Ranged attacks against you are at a disadvantage.
  • You cannot shift, walk, charge, hustle, or run.
  • Your attacks are at a disadvantage.

Ran

You dashed recklessly across the battlefield, either to catch up to a fleeing foe or to escape mortal danger.

  • You cannot shift, charge, or run.
  • Your movement speed while walking or hustling is halved.
