Adventurer Creation

Adventurer Creation

To start, generate a random adventurer using the steps below or click: Random Adventurer and then do your best to survive!

Step 1: Attributes

First, take a d12, a d10, a d8 and a d6 in hand and then throw them across the table1. Assign the die (not the number rolled) furthest from you to Strength, the next furthest to Stamina, the next one to Agility, and finally, the nearest die to Intellect. In the event of a tie for distance, assign the die that shows the lowest value first. If it's still a tie, assign as desired.

Attributes are primarily used to determine your adventurers starting health, rolling initiative, and to overcome any traps, obstacles, or hazards that may bar your way or attempt to do you harm.

Jane takes the four dice (d6, d8, d10, and d12) in hand and tosses them across the table. The furthest die, the d8, is assigned to Strength, the next is the d6 which gets assigned to Stamina. The d10 and d12 ended up next to each other. Jane looks and sees that the d12 rolled a two and the d10 a four. She then assigns the d12 to Agility and the d10 to Intellect.

Her characters attributes are: STR d8, STA d6, AGI d12, INT d10.

If you are unable to throw the dice: roll 1d100, reference the table below, and then assign the dice listed to the following attributes in order: Strength, Stamina, Agility, Intellect.

Step 2: Calling

Calling represents your role in an adventuring party. Roll a d8 and consult the table below to determine your calling.

Table 2 — Calling

1-2: Controller (Not yet completed, reroll.)
3-4: Defender
5-6: Leader
7-*: Skirmisher

The Controller is not completed yet. Reroll.

The Defender is a staunch ally to have at your side when venturing deep into the dark depths of dangerous dungeons. The defender guards their allies, using techniques that distract and disadvantage foes and intercepting enemies that try to slip past the defender, stopping them in their tracks with devastating strikes.

The Leader is a skilled battlefield commander, capable of directing their allies to make additional attacks or slip into an advantageous position. Leaders also aid their allies by example, showing where weak spots in an enemies defenses are or creating an opening for an ally to take advantage of.

The Skirmisher deals death on the battlefield. There is little more that can be said about such individuals. Their ruthless nature is best put to use in one-on-one combat where they can strike relentlessly, unburdened by concern for the safety of their allies.

Step 3: Health & Vitality

Health, also known as hit points or HP, is a measure of how much fatigue, damage, and injury the adventurers and monsters can withstand. When your adventurer or a monster is attacked, damage dealt is subtracted from their current health. If their health reaches zero, they are defeated. Defeated adventurers may be revived if they are stabilized or receive healing before the end of the next round after they were defeated. Monsters are immediately slain unless the players wish to knock them unconscious instead.

Table 3a — Starting Health

Base: Strength + Stamina
Controller: Base + 2d6 + 16
Defender: Base + 4d6 + 24
Leader: Base + 2d6 + 16
Skirmisher: Base + 3d6 + 20

Next, roll a d6 and consult the chart below. This determines your starting Vitality. Vitality can be used between encounters after a short rest to heal 50% of your health. Each adventurer also has the heroic power, Recovery, that lets them use a point of vitality to heal during combat. Vitality is recovered at a rate of one point per uninterrupted extended rest.

Table 3b — Vitality

Optional: Backgrounds

Backgrounds are an optional step of adventurer creation that can add some inspiration and motivation for why your character is so intent on delving into these dungeons. Perhaps you are looking for something from your past or you're trying to pay off an old debt. Maybe you once had power, lands, or a title of nobility and were deposed. Now you seek the means to reclaim that power. You should also use your calling and theme to clarify the background rolled so that it all blends together in one neat package.

  2. Apprentice - You were once a pupil, an apprentice, studying under the tutelage of a well learned master. Was it a mundane art like scrivening or were you learning to be an apothecary? Could it have been a darker or more mystical art like sorcery or witchcraft? Is your former master still alive? If they, are they still an ally or did you betray them? If they're dead or missing… what happened?
  3. Brigand - For years, you've endured as a brigand, a bandit… stealing from others along empty stretches of roads or narrow trails used by smugglers. After provoking an overwhelming response from the locals, you've decided to take up a more 'ethical' profession of treasure hunting instead.
  4. Burglar - You thrived by breaking into the homes of those wealthier than you, taking their gold and silver, and fencing it down at the docks. However, you stole the wrong thing from the wrong person and now you're on the run. Or did you get caught by the guard and now need a quick score to pay off your fine?
  5. Compelled - An unknown force draws you towards the life of an adventurer. A calling to seek out others and venture into the unknown. Is it just voices in your head or something more sinister that has found its way into your mind? Or is it the curse of a dying witch?
  6. Con Artist - You're a fast talker and an even faster runner… which has served you well. Once again, you've taken too much from too many or even just a little from the wrong person and you've been forced to skip town, yet again. Perhaps you've grown tired of living off the gullibity of others or perhaps you're sure the dark places of the world hold more opportunities for you.
  7. Conscript - You were once drafted to fight as a conscript in a war not of your choosing. When you returned home, nothing was as you recalled… or perhaps you originally hailed from another land but were left behind when your troop was disbanded.
  8. Deposed Tyrant - You had great power in your grasp and lost hold of it in a terrible battle. Perhaps the people you ruled with an iron fist overthrew you or another person/creature of great power took it from you, but now… you're left with nothing but a common sword and piecemeal armor.
  9. Destitute - For whatever reason, you are broke. Perhaps your business failed or you had a sure bet backfire on you, but now… you've taken up adventuring under a false name in an effort to escape from those you owe money too.

  11. Digger - As a child, you were fascinated with diggung up buried treasure in the old stony hills behind your farmstead or perhaps you grew up with a parent who traveled the world as an archaeologist. Your past has instilled an obsession to unearth ancient treasures and has sabotaged your attempts to learn a local profession.
  12. Ex-cultist - As part of a strange sect, you became distrusted because of your associations with the cult. The cult however, has no place for you either. What was the cult like; does it still exist? If so, how do they feel about ex-cult members?
  13. Exhumer - By accident or by purpose, you've released something powerful from its prison. Was it a sealed crypt or an ancient tomb? A magical artifact you broke or triggered? Was it truly accidental or did greed drive your motives?
  14. Farmer - Your crops have turned to dust, your fields have gone fallow. You once tilled this land, but now, due to otherworldly corruption, vile sorcery, or perhaps something as mundane as a drought… you have been left homeless and your family has perished.

  18. Healer - Using simple bandages, herbs, and known remedies, you once treated the sick, the infirm, and the wounded. However, you lost someone and you were blamed. Was it incompetence or intent? 19. Hunter - On the edge of civilization, you've survived for many years by catching wild game, hunting or trapping in the deep woods, and selling meat and furs to traders in small border towns. For whatever reason, you've been forced to move on. What drove you out of your hunting grounds?

Or did you stumble through or were you forced into a one-way portal? No matter the reason, you're stuck here now and have decided to make the best of it you can… though you stick out worse than a sore thumb.
